The HSHS is pleased to announce that the call for applications for the bursary of €1,500 to be awarded to a student at the National College of Amenity Horticulture, Glasnevin will open on 14th October. The bursary will enable the successful student to deepen their knowledge of horticulture by spending time in a leading garden in another jurisdiction. In announcing the call for applications, Conall O’Caoimh, our President, commented ‘the Society is pleased to offer this opportunity to a student of the College of Amenity Horticulture in Glasnevin in our 80th anniversary year as an expression of our commitment to promote horticulture in all its forms.’
The HSHS is committed to funding a bursary of the same amount in each of the next five years, beginning in the academic year 2024-25. The HSHS is most grateful to John Mulhern, Principal of the College, Deirdre Walsh Assistant Principal and Louise Jones, Lecturer for welcoming this initiative by the Society and their advice on how best to direct and structure the bursary.
The bursary will be awarded on a competitive basis to students undertaking the Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture or the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture at The College of Amenity Horticulture who meet the terms and conditions of the award. The award will assist with travel and subsistence costs associated with work experience and practical learning for a substantial period in a leading, approved garden in another jurisdiction. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate in their applications how the experience of working in a leading garden will contribute to the climate goals of sustainability and biodiversity in horticulture.
Members of the HSHS and staff of the College will jointly brief students about the opportunity offered by the bursary in October and November. The call for applications will close on 6th January 2025 and interviews of short listed candidates will be held later that month. The award will be paid to the successful student in the first half of 2025.
The successful student will be invited subsequently to speak to the HSHS Society about their experience of working in a leading garden and its impact on their career choices and to contribute a short article to the HSHS Ezine.
